San Gabriels

There are plenty of other great areas in the San Gabriel mountain range, from Crystal Lake and Iron Mountain in the South all the way to Tujunga Canyon at the Northern end of the range.

Iron Mountain

2/19/12  Widely considered to be the 2nd hardest trail in Southern CA behind C2C. Over 7,000' of gain and 15 miles to an elevation of right around 8000'. For some reason I had the urge to try doing it for time. I managed to do it in 5:34 round-trip (not including time on top).

Bridge to Nowhere and Heaton Flats

2/12/12  Back to the Crystal Lake area of the San Gabriels, this time to try the popular Bridge to Nowhere trail as well as about half of the brutal trail to Iron Mountain. 19 miles total for the day and 5500' of gain.

Mt. Islip, Windy Gap, and Mt. Hawkins

1/01/12  Another trip up to San Gabriel Canyon, this time to Crystal Lake with my Dad. He hiked to Mt. Islip while I ran to Mt. Islip then to Windy Gap and Mt. Hawkins. About 18 miles and 5000' gain on a beautiful, clear New Year's Day.

Tujunga Canyon

12/24/11  I had great plans for a 32 mile out-and-back route over Condor Peak to Mount Gleason in the Tujunga Canyon area of the San Gabriel Mountains. But my day didn't quite turn out as planned. But, I still managed to get in around 20 miles with some decent elevation gain.

Smith Mtn and Bear Creek

12/18/11 & 2/4/17  The Upper Bear Creek Trail to Smith Mountain and Bear Creek in the San Gabriel Wilderness. 13 miles of awesome single track. Steep, but mostly runnable, for almost 4000' of total gain.
